Couple married for over 6 decades celebrates the birth of their 100th grandchild

Their family “could start their own town,” he jokes.

There are some families that can get pretty large. I doubt you’ll find a family bigger than this one from Illinois.

They have so many grandkids that their picture frames barely fit on the walls!

Meet Leo and Ruth Zanger, who have been married for 66 years and have 100 grandchildren.

Yes, there are 100 grandkids. That’s a lot of kids to keep track of, and I don’t blame you for doing a double-take.

After years of anticipation, their 100th grandchild was born in 2015.

As soon as they realized they had 99 grandchildren, it became a bit of a race to see which of their children would be born number 99.

Technically, not all the kids are “Grandchildren.” There are some great-grandchildren as well. However, when you’ve been around long enough to have this many, the distinction doesn’t matter as much.

Baby number 100 is named Jaxton Leo Zanger. It is the 46th great-grandchild of the family.

It really begs the question of who is keeping track.

I might forget people’s names if I were one of the grandparents.

That’s something my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren can’t blame me for.

How many people do you know have 53 grandchildren alone?

However, 53 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren only make 99. What about that other one? It’s a great, great-grandchild. It keeps getting crazier, doesn’t it?

Leo and Ruth had 12 children together.

That’s already more than most people will ever need. However, I suppose they wanted a large family.

Their eldest and youngest children were separated by 27 years.

When their youngest sibling was born, their eldest child, who is now 60, already had children of his own. As a result, the youngest sibling was already an uncle when he was born.

It’s crazy how that works, isn’t it?

There is no doubt that family gatherings are a very special occasion.

The only thing that can fit all of them is a church building, which is why most gatherings are held there.

We have a lot of fun when we get together. One of Leo and Ruth’s daughters, Donna Lane, said, “It’s really big.”

With such a large family, everyone can contribute.

The Zangers won’t have a boring or empty dinner night.

It’s a lot of people – a lot of kids – but that’s what it’s all about. Every time we get together, we have a great time.” – she continued.

It would be difficult to get everyone to attend if they lived in different states. Fortunately, most of the family lives in Illinois. Imagine having hundreds of relatives living in different states and trying to invite them all to dinner?

Leo acknowledges that their family is probably not stopping at 100 years old.

It is likely that there will be more. Since there are a lot of young families there just starting out, it wouldn’t surprise me.”

They “could start their own town,” he jokes.

There is no doubt in my mind about him.

Whenever that child is born, they’re going to be in for a big surprise.

Birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s are never dull for the Zangers.
