For my son’s 7th birthday, my mother-in-law (MIL) planned a big dinner with 12 guests and promised to prepare non-meat options for me since I’m a vegetarian.
At the dinner, there was a lot of food, but only cheese cubes and bread for me. She smirked and said in front of everyone, “Isn’t this what you eat anyway?”
I was furious when I heard that. I made a sign for my son, took his hand, and left the party. My husband stayed.
Later, he texted me saying, “Don’t expect me to come home tonight. You disrespected my mom and ruined our son’s birthday.” He stayed at his mom’s place and came home the next day, but it’s been a week, and we’re still avoiding each other.
I believe I did the right thing because I felt very disrespected. She could have just asked me to bring my own food, but instead, she wanted to make fun of me in front of everyone because she always mocks me for being a vegetarian, which I’ve been since I was 12. What do you think I should do?
