My Stepdad Gave Me Up When I Was a Teen — Now He’s Begging for My Help

A Life-Changing Decision

When Erin’s mother p_assed away, her stepfather felt he couldn’t raise Erin alone and decided to give her to her paternal grandmother. Erin was unhappy with this and held resentment towards her stepfather. Now, many years later, her stepfather has returned, seeking her help. Erin is confused and asked for advice on social media.

Erin’s Story

My mom died when I was 14. My stepdad, who had been like a father to me since I was three, said he couldn’t take care of me alone and gave me to my grandmother.

Since then, I haven’t spoken to him. My grandmother, my only living relative, was very strict and not very loving.

Seventeen years later, my stepdad came back. He’s sick and needs money for his treatments. I can’t forgive him because he didn’t want to raise me.

He told me, “Your mom asked me to ensure you have the best life after she died. I knew I couldn’t provide that, so I thought your grandmother, who had more money, should take care of you.”

I’m unsure if I should forgive him. My grandmother had more money but wasn’t affectionate. I think I would have been happier with him, surrounded by memories of my mom.
