Life can surprise you when you least expect it. That’s what happened to me, Jonathan, just a few weeks ago when I discovered something shocking about my wife, Mary. Until then, I thought everything in my life was stable. I’m an ordinary guy living a simple life. Mary and I have been married for six years, and we have a wonderful five-year-old daughter, Jazmin.
Jazmin is a lively child, with her mom’s dark eyes and my stubbornness. She lights up any room she’s in. Mary has always been my rock. She’s confident and comfortable being herself, never wearing makeup or flashy clothes. In fact, Mary owns only one pair of high heels, which she’s worn just a couple of times since we got married.
But recently, something started to feel off. It began about a month ago when I came home from work, tired but excited to see my family. Jazmin would be playing in those high heels, wobbling around and saying she was a princess like her mom. I’d lift her up, kiss her cheek, and tell her she was the most beautiful princess.
As time passed, I started wondering—where was Jazmin getting these ideas about high heels and lipstick? Mary never wore those things; she preferred her comfy flats and simple lip balm. The more I thought about it, the more uneasy I became.
One evening, while Mary was washing dishes and Jazmin was playing with her dolls (which now had red marks that looked like lipstick), I decided to ask Jazmin about it. I casually asked her why she thought her mom wore heels. Jazmin looked surprised and insisted that Mary did wear heels and lipstick every day when I was at work.
She explained that Mary would drop her off at Aunt Lily’s house, then put on red lipstick in the car before leaving. My heart skipped a beat. This was completely unexpected. I asked Jazmin again, and she confirmed that Mary looked very pretty in these things, but only when I wasn’t around.
Mary walked in just then, smiling as usual, but I couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling inside me. I pretended to be interested in our conversation about princesses, but inside, I was worried. What was Mary hiding from me? Why did Jazmin seem to know more about this than I did?
The next morning, I left the house early, pretending to go to a meeting, but I actually followed Mary. She drove to a building with a sign that read “Radiance Modeling Agency.” My heart raced as I watched her go inside. This wasn’t the IT company she had told me about.
I parked and went into the building, finding myself in a lobby filled with models and photographers. I saw Mary talking to a woman, receiving a garment bag, and then heading toward some doors.
I followed her inside and saw something I never expected: bright lights, mirrors, and a runway. Mary emerged in a stunning red dress, complete with makeup, walking the runway with confidence. She looked completely different from the natural woman I knew.
After the photoshoot, I confronted Mary as she was heading to her car. She was shocked to see me and hesitated before admitting the truth. Mary confessed that modeling had always been her dream, but she kept it a secret because she was afraid I wouldn’t understand.
She assured me it wasn’t about the money but about fulfilling a personal dream. However, she also felt conflicted because she thought it might go against the values she knew I cherished in her.
