My MIL Let Her Friend Use My Clothes and Makeup While I Was on a Business Trip – Karma Worked on Them Better than Any Plan

While I was away on a business trip, I discovered that my mother-in-law’s friend had raided my wardrobe, but karma took care of things in a surprising way that made revenge unnecessary. Imagine someone digging through your personal stuff while you’re not home—now picture it’s your mother-in-law’s friend trying on your expensive clothes. That’s exactly what happened to me.

I’m Karen, a 32-year-old businesswoman and mom. This strange event took place just a few weeks ago when I was packing for a business trip to New York. My mother-in-law, Janet, came into my bedroom, reassuring me that she’d take care of my husband, Dave, and our daughter, Marly, while I was away. I appreciated her help and trusted her completely—something I’d soon regret.

Two days into my trip, I got a shocking text from my neighbor and best friend, Lisa. She asked if I knew someone named Sheryl. When I said no, she told me that Sheryl, a friend of Janet’s, had been hanging out at my house. Lisa had seen her wearing my clothes and using my makeup.

Stunned, I asked for proof, and Lisa sent me a video of a middle-aged woman walking around my living room in my favorite red dress and putting on what looked like my Chanel lipstick. Furious, I called Lisa, who confirmed that Sheryl had been sneaking into my house whenever Dave wasn’t home. Lisa thought Sheryl was a relative until she saw her through the window trying on my clothes.

I was angry, but I kept my cool until I got home. When I finally did, I was ready for a confrontation. I asked Dave, who had no idea what was going on, where Janet was. He pointed me to our bedroom, where I found my closet in complete disarray.

Clothes were scattered everywhere, makeup was left open, and worst of all, my wedding dress was on the floor, stained with red wine. Janet showed up, holding Marly’s hand, and tried to brush off the mess as harmless fun. She said Sheryl had a date and needed something nice to wear, so she thought it was okay to borrow a few things. I couldn’t believe their nerve.

Dave was just as angry and confronted his mom about violating our trust and privacy. Right then, the doorbell rang, and there was Sheryl, smiling and introducing herself. She said Janet told her it was fine to borrow my stuff. I calmly but firmly told her that what she did wasn’t borrowing—it was trespassing and stealing. Dave told her to leave and never come back, and I asked Janet to leave as well.

Tensions were high in our house for the next few days. While I was furious, I decided not to seek revenge. My friend Lisa suggested I let karma take care of it, and I took her advice.

A week later, Janet called me in a panic. She said Sheryl was in the hospital with a severe allergic reaction that left her face swollen and covered in a rash. The doctors believed it was from the makeup she used—my makeup. Janet, feeling ashamed and sorry, apologized and asked for forgiveness.

Even though I was glad to see karma at work, I knew it would take time to rebuild trust with Janet. She tried to make up for it by replacing my makeup, cleaning my wedding dress, and even hiring someone to organize my closet. Dave also had a serious talk with her about respecting our boundaries and made it clear that her behavior was unacceptable.

In the end, I didn’t have to do anything. Karma taught Janet and Sheryl a tough lesson. Our family grew stronger because of the incident, and Janet now respects the boundaries we set. Sometimes, the best revenge is just letting the world take care of it—with a little humor.
