2 / Millionaire Dresses as a Bum and Visits His Company on an Undercover Mission — Story of the Day

He Was Treated Like a Nobody—Until the Truth About Who He Really Was Changed Everythi

Richard stood quietly in the lobby, his clothes worn and his shoes dusty. It was cold outside, and he just wanted a warm place and maybe a little food. But instead of kindness, he was met with harsh words.

“What do you want, bum?” the security guard asked sharply.

Richard spoke calmly. “I just need to warm up and get something to eat.”

The guard looked annoyed. “This isn’t a shelter. You need to leave.”

Richard didn’t argue. He gently replied, “Could you call Tom? I think he might help me.”

The guard laughed. “Tom? He’ll throw you out faster than I will.”

Still, Richard asked kindly. “Please, just ask him.”

With a loud sigh, the guard rolled his eyes and finally agreed to call Tom. As Richard stood quietly, he looked at a nearby couch but didn’t sit. He had already been told not to.

Then, a young woman walked in. She was dressed nicely, smiled at the guard, and started heading to the elevator. But when she saw Richard, she stopped. She noticed how tired and cold he looked.

“Sir, are you alright? Do you need anything?” she asked kindly.

Richard nodded. “I just want to warm up and maybe have something to eat.”

Without hesitation, she handed him her bottle of water. “Take this,” she said. “Come with me. We have food upstairs.”

Richard looked surprised. “But that’s your water.”

“It’s okay,” she smiled. “You need it more than I do.”

Before they could go, the guard stepped in. “Tom said no one gets in without permission.”

She frowned. “But he’s just hungry. He’s not hurting anyone.”

“What’s your name, sir?” she asked.

“Richie,” he answered softly.

She turned to the guard. “Richie just wants to eat.”

The guard crossed his arms. “Tom is coming. Until then, this man goes nowhere.”

The woman’s face turned serious. “That’s not right. He’s a human being. Why are you treating him this way?”

Before more could be said, the elevator opened. Tom walked out, looking annoyed. “What’s happening here?” he asked.

Richard spoke again. “Sir, I just wanted a warm place and something to eat.”

Tom glared. “Do I look like a charity worker? Leave. You’re hurting the company’s image. What if a client sees you?”

“But he’s hungry,” the young woman said.

Tom turned on her. “And who are you to question me? You’re just an assistant. Go back to work.”

He pointed at the guard. “Throw him out. And you,” he said to the woman, “follow me.”

As she walked past Richard, she whispered, “Go to the back door. I’ll meet you there.”

Minutes later, Richard stood at the back entrance, shivering. The same woman came out smiling warmly.

“Let’s go get lunch,” she said. “There’s a small place nearby that serves great food.”

As they walked, Richard said, “Thank you. Your name is Lindsay, right?”

She laughed. “Actually, it’s Nancy. Tom never remembers. He calls me something new every day.”

At the restaurant, Nancy ignored the looks from waiters and sat with Richard.

“Order anything,” she said. “It’s my treat.”

Richard hesitated. “Do they pay you that well?”

Nancy shook her head. “No. When I got this job, Tom promised a good salary, but later said I didn’t deserve it because I was too young.”

Richard clenched his fists under the table. He was upset, but Nancy smiled.

“My grandmother always said kindness is its own reward,” she said.

Richard smiled back. “She was a wise woman.”

After their meal, Nancy packed extra food for Richard and handed it to him with a smile. He felt warmth he hadn’t felt in a long time.

The next day, Nancy arrived at work to find everyone whispering. A coworker told her, “The company’s owner passed away. Since he had no family, no one knows who will take over.”

Tom looked confident, thinking he’d be the next boss.

Then the elevator opened. A lawyer stepped out and asked, “Where is Nancy?”

Everyone stared.

“Me?” she asked, confused.

“Yes,” said the lawyer. “We need to talk.”

In a private room, the lawyer handed her papers. “You are the new owner. Richard left everything to you.”

Nancy’s eyes widened. “But why me?”

The lawyer handed her a letter:

Dear Nancy,

Six months ago, I learned I was dying. I had no family, and I didn’t know who to trust with my company.

I decided to visit each office dressed as a homeless man. I wanted to see who had real kindness.

Most people turned me away. But then I met you.

You gave me water. You gave me food. You gave me dignity.

That’s why I’m leaving the company to you. Lead with kindness and heart. That’s all I ask.

Yours truly,
Richard (Or as you knew me, Richie)

P.S. Your first task: Fire Tom. And call him Timmy.

Nancy held the letter close, tears in her eyes.

She had no idea that one small act of kindness would change her life forever.

It’s a powerful reminder: you never know who someone really is—or how your actions might change everything.

Kindness costs nothing, but it can mean everything.
