Having a child with a disability is hard for parents as they have special needs, attention, and need to be attended to almost all the time. Not all barbers know how to calm children with disabilities when they are cutting their hair, but thankfully one hairdresser seems to know all the ways to calm them down when it comes to cutting their hair.
A barber from New Jersey named Billy Dinnerstein, owner of Your Kind Of Cuts, went viral on social media in June 2023 after the salon’s TikTok account posted a video of him cutting a young boy’s hair.
A kid named Justice was seen resisting several times. In an attempt to prevent his hair from being shaved, he tried standing up and moving out of the barber’s way. He even attempted to grab the clippers off his barber’s hands.
Dinnerstein’s handling of the situation captured the hearts of online users worldwide when it was revealed the boy has autism.
The video has garnered more than 1 million views and thousands of comments as of July 2023.
Whenever Dinnerstein encounters a child or an adult with sensory disorders or learning disabilities, he doesn’t follow any routine.
His approach differs depending on the client he is working with.

Dinnerstein said: “I don’t know what I’m dealing with until they walk through the door … A lot of the time, the tension is coming from the parents.”
Jahod Carson, Justice’s father, said Dinnerstein made them feel comfortable during Justice’s first haircut.
He recalled, “There were no rules and (Billy) didn’t tell me what to do – we just focused on making my son comfortable first.”
Even though the barber did a great job with Justice’s haircut, Carson noted that both of them played a crucial role in making him feel comfortable.
“He wanted me to trust him … we were both helping each other out,” he explained.
Besides Carson and Justice, a woman named Nicole Capuano from New Jersey also found the hair salon online when she couldn’t cut her son Giovanni’s hair.
Dinnerstein’s approach was different, as Capuano recalled how when Giovanni was getting his hair cut, the barber made him feel like a part of the process rather than distracting him. In the end, Giovanni never cried.
Whenever Dinnerstein cuts the hair of children with disabilities, he said: “It’s nice when the kids walk in crying, then at the end the mom leaves crying of happiness. It’s a complete 180.”
Dinnerstein can be seen dancing around with his young client in one video posted on Your Kind of Cuts’ official Instagram account, in addition to posting on TikTok.
One commenter praised the barber, saying, “God bless him!”.
