Woman Buys Beautiful Vase For $3.99 But Little Did She Know It Was Actually A Treasure Worth Much More

As well as scouting through vintage finds with a story, thrifting allows you to find them for a much lower price.

Jessica Vincent is one woman who enjoys thrifting from time to time. One day, she bought a one-of-a-kind item for just $3.99, but little did she know that it would change her life for the better because she sold it for more than she had expected.

During an interview with CNN Style in December 2023, the woman recalled going to secondhand stores, flea markets, and even yard sales with her mom just to thrift good finds. In later years, it also became a habit for her.

Every two or three weeks, they go to Goodwill, and one day they found an eye-catching decoration.

People say I have a good eye… You can put me in an aisle with a whole bunch of dollar store stuff and I can pick out the one item with a little bit of value. Having watched a lot of ‘Antiques Roadshow,’ I feel like I’ve trained myself.” she said.

Vincent discovered a glass vase shaped like a bottle with red and green streaks around it. Her first impression was that it was a “nice piece” of good quality.

Because of how good it looked, she was surprised no one picked it up and bought it before her.

After paying $3.99 for the vase, she took it home. Vincent recognized the Italian markings on the glass after inspecting it. Her curiosity was piqued by a missing word.

People soon identified that the missing word was “Venini,” an Italian glassworks company, after Vincent posted some photos in a glassware Facebook group.

‘Yeah, this is really good,’ they said. Then someone said, ‘Oh, that’s Carlo Scarpa… top shelf, a collector’s dream,'” she said.

In 1942, Carlo Scarpa became the creative director of the Italian company and designed the “Pennellate” series for them.

Founder of the auction house Wright, Richard Wright, told the outlet that when he saw the image of the vase, he knew it was authentic and it was “quite rare to find a work like this.”

Vincent’s vase was verified by experts at her home, and it was later identified as authentic. It was later listed on Wright’s website and valued between $30,000 and $50,000.

After watching the auction online, the woman and her partner were shocked at the vase’s final price of $107,000.

The excitement was palpable. “We were shaking; we were cheering,” she said.

Even though Vincent loved the fact that she could say she owned a “Pennellate,” she felt that it was right to auction it so that it could be “fully appreciated.” She also said that she needed the money more than she needed the vase.
