A single mother of one shared her story on Reddit about a scary situation she faced with her son. Living in a small one-bedroom apartment, she always tried her best to provide for him despite their struggles. Her son’s father was never around or supported them financially.
Her son, Owen, attended a public school, and when he was about to start second grade, she moved him to a school closer to her work, making things a bit easier. Owen became friends with a boy named Charlie, and they started spending a lot of time together.
Charlie’s parents, Nate and Paige, were happy to have Owen around. When summer break was near, Paige, who stayed at home, offered to look after Owen for a week. The mother was hesitant but agreed because Owen and Charlie were best friends. During that week, Owen had a great time and received many gifts.
Later, Nate and Paige invited Owen on vacation. The mother felt uneasy but didn’t want to ruin Owen’s fun, so she agreed. As time went on, Paige’s interest in Owen became more intense. Paige revealed that they wished Charlie had a sibling and saw Owen as a brother.
By Christmas, Nate and Paige asked if Owen could spend the holidays with them and gave him many gifts. This made the mother very uncomfortable. When she confronted them, they revealed they wanted to keep Owen and suggested becoming his legal guardians. Shocked, she refused and immediately cut off all contact with them, fearing for Owen’s safety.
Explaining to Owen why he couldn’t see Charlie anymore was tough. Moving wasn’t an option due to her financial situation. Following advice from Reddit, she informed the school that Nate and Paige were not allowed to pick up Owen.
One day, Paige tried to take Owen from his aftercare center, but the staff refused and called the police. Paige wasn’t arrested, but a report was filed, which the mother planned to use to get a protection order.
Finally, she explained to Owen why he couldn’t be friends with Charlie outside of school. Owen promised he would always stay with her because she was his mother and had worked hard to provide for him.
