Delma and Tom Ledbetter had the kind of love that we usually see only on TV. After 62 years of marriage, they were only 90 minutes apart when they died.
Maybe the unwavering love of spouses can teach us something in a world where break-ups and divorces are common.
Delma and Tom began their love affair in their twenties. Friends introduced them, and it was most likely love at first sight, since they planned to marry soon after.
The Texas couple has raised children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren together. During their retirement, they wanted to explore and travel around America.
Delma became ill in 2017, when the couple were both in their 80s. Donetta, the couple’s daughter, recalls the difficult time.
They were not able to obtain a pulse. A blood pressure reading was not possible. Nothing could be obtained. On the other hand, Mama clung to something.
A few days later, Tom was admitted to the hospital with Delma. They had no idea that they were about to experience the saddest, sweetest, and most romantic experience of their lives.
The last time Donetta saw her parents alive, they were laying side by side in their hospital beds. Tom took her hand in his.
The daughter explained, “Daddy went over there and took her hand and just lay there with her,” and it was very wonderful.
Stephanie, Delma and Tom’s granddaughter, wanted to photograph the couple because it was such a nice day.
Both Delma and Tom died shortly after, never spending more than 90 minutes apart. Death could not separate them as they were truly devoted to each other.
The picture of the old couple, which was both beautiful and terrible, went viral online and touched many hearts. Their story was similar to that of The Notebook, with one notable exception. They did not follow a script.
The unvarnished image, as well as the simple but profound love story that spanned six decades, inspired people.
The couple is buried together at Restwood Memorial Park in Texas.
