Lotteries are played every day by millions of people in the hope of winning big cash prizes. There is a one in 300 million chance of winning the lottery. A Hartlepool family in County Durham beat those large odds in 2019. In that year, Frances Connolly and her husband Patrick won the EuroMillions jackpot. From the annual lottery, the couple won 115 million euros (just over $115 million).
After winning a large sum of money, the couple did something that most winners would never even consider. Their winnings were given away in large amounts. They decided to give away nearly half of their large money sum to help people less fortunate than themselves. From their winnings, Frances, a retired social worker and schoolteacher, has already established two foundations. One foundation is named after her own mother, Kathleen Graham, and the other is called PFC Trust, which supports young carers, the elderly, and refugees.
The family estimates they have given away over 60 million of their winnings, and they don’t intend to stop there. During the worldwide pandemic, they admitted that establishing foundations and donating money made them feel better. The couple, who have three daughters, also admits that they do not desire expensive luxury items such as a yacht since they find joy in seeing others happy. They say they don’t need all of their large earnings in the first place, since they have everything they need.

Frances told RTE: “People ask me, ‘How did you cope with that amount of money?’ I said, ‘I never did. It wasn’t in the bank for two days.” She continued, “It’s still weird, but I’ve never had to deal with all that money because we only had it for a short time.”
When you spend stupidly before you have a large sum of money, you will carry those traits into your wealth. It won’t make you sensible if you’re stupid before you get it,” Frances said. “Money won’t make you sensible.”
Money gives you the freedom to be the person you want to be. That’s what I would tell a winner if I had any advice,” the winner replied.
Money can reveal your true colors, according to Frances. You should think about what type of person you are and what type of person you want to be.
They have given away so much of their winnings that they have budgets for how to spend them. “This was just in January … we do a budget every year, and we check our expenses. We are (already) on the budget for 2032. We may need to revise it,” she said.
As a result, she questioned why such a large sum of money was needed in the first place. We look forward to seeing where else this generous family donates their money!
