Using social media, a Colorado waitress taught a lesson about working in the U.S.
According to Mic, Taylar Cordova took a picture of the receipt after receiving a tip of $0 on a bill of $187.43. The picture was accompanied by an articulate and passionate commentary.
Not just to the customer who stiffed her, but to anyone who does not tip, she wrote, “You are the lowest of the low.”. She then explained the consequences of diners not tipping properly:
When you think it’s okay to not tip your server, that’s one more bill that stacks up because they’re short on cash. It is food for the week that our families will go without because you didn’t think it was necessary, even after asking for everything under the sun and receiving it free of charge. Even TWO more dollars is too much for you to pay for this basic necessity for my daughter.
Consequences follow every decision. Next time you don’t want to tip, regardless of the situation before receiving your bill, consider how much you would have to work that week off to feed your family, not just yourself, if you didn’t tip. Would you be able to pay your bills with that pay alone? Would you be able to feed your family and yourself at the same time? When you don’t tip, that’s what happens.
According to the Labor Department, employers must only pay tipped employees $2.13 per hour in direct wages if the sum of the direct wages and the tips equals the federal minimum wage.
