In response to his mother’s text message, a teen returns a wallet with thousands of dollars inside to a veteran
Upon finding a veteran’s lost wallet, which contained $2,300, a teenager immediately returned it. His mother texted him shortly after.
Kindness can sometimes be found in the simplest of acts. The story of a teenager from 2015 remains a testament to our kindness.
Tommy O’Connor, a senior at Irvington High School, was leaving a 7-Eleven in Fremont, California, when he had a “What would you do?” moment. While walking back to class in Irvington, the teen noticed a wallet on the ground after buying a soda at the convenience store.
A lot of $100 bills were inside when he picked it up and looked inside. The wallet contained $2,300 in cash, despite Tommy not counting it at the time.
Tommy had to decide whether to return the wallet to its rightful owner or go shopping after seeing the wad of cash.
Tommy was tempted by the money for a very good reason. Tommy’s family lived on a fixed income. Tommy didn’t have enough money to buy lunch even the day before. His family could have benefited greatly from that amount of money.
Most of us have a hard time maintaining our integrity in this situation. Tommy stuck to his principles and decided to find the wallet’s rightful owner. Ana Gomez, his paraeducator, received it immediately from the teenager.
The wallet was searched for the owner’s identity by Gomez. As she counted the money, she also discovered a veteran’s identification card. The wallet contained the veteran’s identification card, which revealed the veteran’s name and his service record.
In order to return the wallet, Tommy O’Connor and Anna Gomez contacted Irvington Principal Sarah Smoot.
In the meeting, the vet revealed that the money was for his rent, and therefore invaluable to him. As a reward, he gave Tommy $50 and thanked him for his kindness.
Her mother, Sherry, was notified directly by text message about the teen’s actions by the school. Before the school day ended, she texted her son:
My son, I am very proud of you. I received a call from Mrs. Kalra. Wow, you’re one in a million. To the moon and back, I love you.”
Tommy Ron’s father Ron also praised the teenager’s kindness:
Since we live month-to-month, it’s a big chunk of money and I’m so proud of him for doing that. “I’m just glad he did what was right, and I hope that all my kids would have done the same.”
Tommy has set a priceless example.
It is Tommy’s actions that demonstrate that the world can still be a good and just place, where people help each other because it is the right thing to do.
