Pope Francis Passes Away at 88, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Service and Faith

Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88, as confirmed by the Vatican in a statement released earlier today (April 21). The announcement was made by Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who shared the sad news with the world.

In his statement, Cardinal Farrell said: “Dear brothers and sisters, with great sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis, returned to the Father’s house. His life was dedicated to serving the Lord and His Church. He taught us to live by the values of the Gospel with faith, courage, and universal love, especially towards the poor and marginalized.”

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of Jesus Christ, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the boundless, merciful love of God, One and Triune.”

Later, the Vatican News provided an update on the cause of death, confirming that Pope Francis passed away due to a stroke, which was followed by a coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse.

The report was issued by Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, Director of Health and Hygiene for Vatican City. According to Dr. Arcangeli, the Pope had a history of health complications, including acute respiratory failure caused by bilateral pneumonia, bronchiectasis, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. These health conditions contributed to the stroke and subsequent collapse.

Dr. Arcangeli stated, “I hereby declare that, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, the cause of death is as stated above.”

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, had led the Roman Catholic Church for many years. Just over a day before his passing, he delivered a speech in celebration of Easter in St. Peter’s Square, addressing the faithful in a heartfelt message.

In his speech, Pope Francis said, “Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter! May God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit bless you all.” He then asked for his Urbi et Orbi blessing to be read aloud by the master of ceremonies.

His final testament was released shortly after his death, where Pope Francis expressed that he felt he was “approaching the twilight of my earthly life.” He spoke about his final wishes, stating: “With firm hope in eternal life, I wish to set out my final wishes regarding the place of my burial.”

Pope Francis requested that his remains rest in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a significant place for him, as he had always entrusted himself to the Mother of Our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, throughout his life and ministry.

He also shared his thoughts on the design of his tomb and how the funeral costs should be managed, expressing his gratitude for all those who had supported him during his life. “May the Lord grant a fitting reward to all who have loved me and continue to pray for me,” he wrote. “The suffering I have endured in my final years, I offer to the Lord for peace in the world and for unity among all people.”

Pope Francis’ death marks the end of an era in the Catholic Church. His legacy of compassion, dedication, and service to the poor will continue to inspire people all over the world. As we remember his contributions, we also honor his memory and reflect on the incredible work he accomplished during his life.
