When hiking in the wilderness, the unexpected thrill of spotting wildlife, both large and small, is one of the best parts.
It is possible to spot a wide range of animals and plants within the United States National Park system, from the small (woodchucks, squirrels, chipmunks, etc.) to the enormous (buffaloes, grizzly bears, and moose).
To help its fans identify the vast array of wildlife that exists out there on the trails, the Midwest National Parks Facebook page recently released a riddle that had quite a few people stumped.
What are the names of all the animals in the picture below?
North America is Teeming With Wildlife
There are more than 450 species of mammals, over 900 species of birds, more than 650 reptiles, more than 300 amphibians, and at least 4,000 arachnids (spiders) in North America, and with so much left to discover, there could still be plenty of unknown species.
Pictured below are some of the continent’s most iconic animals, many of which are hidden in plain sight.
What kind of animals do you see?

In the picture above, how many animals did you see?
Once again proving that there is no such thing as absolute truth, many of the Parks Service’s readers found animal silhouettes hidden in the picture, which sparked extensive discussion on Facebook.
“A lot,” wrote one Facebook commenter named William, seemingly waving the white flag before even beginning.
“Look closer people,” wrote a reader named Debbie, who seemed to be seeing things others weren’t.
Yet another commenter named Sean found yet another supposedly hidden animal in the picture that no one else had noticed.
In the comments section, he said, “There’s a baby dolphin there.”.
When all was said and done, most people got the “official” answer correct after two days of guessing.
Answer to wildlife mystery revealed by Parks Service
According to the Park Service, the correct answer is twelve animals, as shown in the graphic below.
There are also interesting historical facts about each of the animals shown, including the American bison, which was designated as the National Mammal of the United States in 2016.

Also, some people claimed to have seen a spider near the rabbit’s foot.
However, this picture is an interesting way to learn more about the amazing wildlife that surrounds us.
How many of these animals did you see, and how many have you seen in the wild?
